Zen & the Art of Dumbbell Maintenance
Part 1: The Calm Before the Curse
The gym was unusually peaceful that morning.
No Brosgaeus shouting about "alpha glutes."
No Jeff apologizing to exercise equipment.
Just quiet music.
Morning sunlight.
And a woman named Luna.
Luna wasn't like anyone who had ever encountered the cursed dumbbell.
Where Neva had been steel and precision...
Luna was sunshine and soft blankets.
Where Brosgaeus was thunder...
Luna was one long, contented exhale.
Where Jeff was a nervous chihuahua...
Luna was a golden retriever doing yoga on a front porch.
She entered the gym barefoot, carrying her yoga mat, a reusable water bottle covered in little cosmic stickers, and a smile that somehow made strangers smile back.
"Good morning, sweetheart," she said to the guy at the front desk.
He smiled politely.
He absolutely did not remember her name.
She absolutely knew that.
She didn't mind.
She wandered toward her favorite corner.
Then stopped.
"...Oh."
Her yoga mat was trapped beneath a heavy dumbbell.
Not just any dumbbell.
The Dumbbell.
The Dumbbell™.
"Oh, excuse me, friend," Luna said softly, kneeling beside it.
"I just need my mat."
"I appreciate you staying grounded."
She wrapped her fingers around the handle.
The room began to glow.
The dumbbell hummed.
And somewhere...
The universe whispered.
> "Let peace soften the rigid heart."
POOF!
A burst of glitter.
A gentle chime.
The unmistakable scent of lavender.
When the light faded...
Luna was gone.
In her place sat a sleek wireless charging mount.
A tiny lotus flower was engraved along the side.
---
A few minutes later...
Jeff and Neva walked into the gym hand in hand.
Jeff radiated the energy of someone who still couldn't believe he was dating a former Bluetooth ghost.
Neva radiated the energy of someone who loved Jeff dearly...
...but still wished he'd stop folding towels into abstract art.
Brosgaeus jogged in behind them wearing a tank top that read:
MINDFUL MUSCLE
He claimed he was "working on himself."
Jeff spotted the charging mount.
He froze.
"...Oh."
"...Oh no."
"...Brosgaeus?"
Brosgaeus squinted.
"...No way."
"Is..."
"...Is that another one?"
Neva folded her arms.
"Why hasn't this gym been condemned?"
Jeff carefully picked up the mount.
He tilted his head.
"...Guys."
"This one feels..."
"...nice."
Brosgaeus blinked.
"...Nice?"
"I don't know."
"It has pleasant energy."
Neva sighed.
"Great."
"A hippie ghost."
Brosgaeus turned the mount over.
"Huh."
"Cute little flower."
"Way less angry than yours."
Neva slowly looked at him.
"...Say that again."
Before Brosgaeus could accidentally start another argument...
The car stereo came to life.
Soft music crackled through the speakers.
Then...
A warm, gentle voice floated into the car like moonlight and herbal tea.
"...Hello, friends."
A tiny pause.
"...Um..."
"...I think I've become... technology."
Jeff gasped.
"...She's nice."
Neva narrowed her eyes.
"I don't trust it."
Brosgaeus leaned toward the dashboard.
"Uh..."
"Hey."
"I'm Brosgaeus."
"Oh!"
"Hi, Brosgaeus."
Her voice carried the calm enthusiasm of someone greeting an old friend.
"Are you doing alright?"
Brosgaeus blinked.
"...Yeah?"
"Your aura feels..."
She paused thoughtfully.
"...very stressed."
"My..."
"...what feels what?"
Luna smiled.
"Oh, honey."
"We're going to have such a lovely conversation."
