Part 4: A Lesson in Strength
Jeff's fitness journey continued to build momentum.
Under Brosgaeus' relentless coaching, he was changing—not just physically, but mentally as well.
He had learned discipline.
He had learned consistency.
He had learned that getting stronger wasn't about finding shortcuts. It was about showing up, day after day, even when he didn't feel like it.
And somewhere along the way...
Brosgaeus had begun changing too.
One evening, after an absolutely brutal leg day—yes, Jeff was finally doing leg day without trying to "accidentally" skip it—he collapsed onto his couch with a satisfied groan.
The Bluetooth speaker sat quietly on the coffee table.
Too quietly.
Jeff frowned.
"Hey, Brosgaeus."
Nothing.
"You alright?"
A few seconds passed before the familiar gruff voice finally answered.
"...Yeah."
"You sure?"
"...Just thinking."
Jeff sat up.
That was new.
Brosgaeus had been loud.
Bossy.
Argumentative.
Occasionally impossible.
Thoughtful?
Not so much.
"What about?"
There was another long silence.
Then Brosgaeus spoke.
"You know..."
"When I was human..."
"I thought strength was simple."
Jeff listened.
"I figured the strongest guy in the room won."
"Lift more."
"Look better."
"Show off."
"Make everyone else feel small."
He sighed.
"I spent years chasing that."
"And you know what?"
"I wasn't strong."
Jeff frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Brosgaeus answered quietly.
"Real strength isn't lifting the most weight."
"It's helping someone else lift theirs."
"I used to laugh at beginners."
"I'd make fun of people who didn't know what they were doing."
"People like you."
Jeff smiled.
"I noticed."
"I thought being stronger than them made me important."
He paused.
"But teaching you..."
"Watching you keep showing up..."
"Watching you refuse to quit..."
"It made me realize something."
"I wasn't the strong one."
"You were."
The room fell silent.
Jeff wasn't sure what to say.
Brosgaeus laughed awkwardly.
"...Don't get used to compliments."
Jeff grinned.
"Too late."
Another pause.
Then Brosgaeus spoke again.
"...I'm proud of you, kid."
"For sticking with it."
"For trusting me."
"And..."
"For becoming the kind of person I should've been years ago."
Jeff swallowed the unexpected lump in his throat.
"...Thanks."
"That means a lot."
The silence lasted exactly three seconds.
Then—
"Alright."
"Enough emotional nonsense."
"You still squat like a newborn deer."
Jeff burst out laughing.
"There he is."
The next afternoon, Jeff returned to the gym.
As he walked toward the weight racks...
Something caught his eye.
An old dumbbell.
It looked ordinary.
Except...
Jeff could've sworn he'd never seen it before.
He bent down.
The instant his hand touched the metal...
Warmth spread through his arm.
The same strange feeling.
The same impossible energy.
The cursed dumbbell.
Only this time...
Nothing happened to Jeff.
Instead—
A brilliant flash of light exploded across the room.
Jeff threw his hands over his eyes.
When the light faded...
Someone was standing where the phone mount had been.
Tall.
Broad shoulders.
Muscular.
Confused.
Brosgaeus slowly looked down at his hands.
He flexed his fingers.
Touched his face.
Then laughed.
A real laugh.
"...I'm back?"
Jeff stared.
"...Brosgaeus?"
Brosgaeus looked at him with wide eyes.
"...Kid."
"We actually did it."
Jeff couldn't stop smiling.
"...Yeah."
"I guess we did."
Brosgaeus walked over to the gym mirror.
The muscles were still there.
The broad shoulders.
The powerful frame.
Everything looked exactly the same.
Except...
He didn't feel like the same man.
For the first time...
He didn't care if he was the strongest person in the room.
He turned toward Jeff.
"I don't know how to thank you."
Jeff shrugged.
"You already have."
Brosgaeus smiled.
"I'm not going back."
"Not to who I was."
"I'm done chasing trophies."
"I'm done putting people down."
"If strength means anything..."
"It should help somebody."
Jeff nodded.
"I think you'll make an amazing trainer."
Brosgaeus laughed.
"...You know..."
"I think I'd actually like that."
He reached over and clapped Jeff on the shoulder.
"And you?"
"You're stronger than you think."
"It had nothing to do with the weights."
"It never did."
Jeff smiled.
"I'll remember that."
"I know you will."
The two walked out of the gym together.
One beginning a new life.
The other continuing one he'd nearly given up on.
Brosgaeus had spent years believing strength came from muscles.
Jeff had shown him it came from character.
As for Jeff...
He kept lifting.
Not because he wanted to impress anyone.
But because every rep reminded him that real growth happened one small step at a time.
And every now and then...
Whenever he spotted someone new standing nervously by the dumbbell rack...
He'd walk over.
Smile.
And ask—
"Need a spot?"
A FEW DAYS LATER:
As Jeff and Brosgaeus were exiting the gym, sipping their protein shakes, Jeff glanced toward the toy store across the parking lot.
A little kid pointed excitedly.
"Mom! The giraffe's here!"
Jeff looked down.
He was still wearing the giraffe costume.
He sighed.
"...I really should've changed first."
Brosgaeus burst into laughter.
The End.
